Atlas Peak Viticultural Area

Sonoma County tours

AVA: Atlas Peak | Region: North Coast | AVA Area: 11,400 | AVA planted: 1,500

Atlas Peak AVA is an American Viticultural Area located within Napa Valley AVA just northeast of the city of Napa, located on the western slopes of the Vaca Mountain range. The Vaca Mountain range separates The Napa and Sacramento Valleys; its elevation is roughly 2,663 feet. The Atlas Peak appellation is 11,400 acres of which 1,500 acres are planted vineyards. The Atlas Peak appellation elevation ranges from 760 to 2,663 feet.

Some of the growing takes place higher than 1,250 feet; most grow at higher than 1,500 feet, this makes the Atlas Peak appellation elevation higher than most of Napa's wine region which limits the effect of the cool fog coming in from the Pacific Ocean, (San Pablo Bay, located
just south of Napa).

The westward orientation of most vineyards on the Vaca Mountains also extends the amount of direct sunlight on the grapes. The soil of this AVA is volcanic and very porous which allows it to cool down quickly despite the increased sunlight. The area has a 30ºF temperature variation between daytime and nighttime. This contributes to the balance of acidity in the grapes that the Atlas Peak Appellation vineyards are known to have.
